Cardinal Joseph E. Ritter rose through the ranks of the Roman Catholic Church to become the only cardinal from Indiana. He led the diocese of Indianapolis and St. Louis, and championed the cause of desegregation. He became an influential cardinal in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965.

The Cardinal Ritter Birthplace Foundation is renovating the birthplace and childhood home of Cardinal Joseph Elmer Ritter, and building a community center in New Albany, Indiana.

Cardinal Ritter knew if anything was to be done, the first step was to roll up his sleeves, ask for help and get started.

Recently threatened with demolition due to its neglected condition, Cardinal Ritter's boyhood home is an important and tangible link to one of the most influential American Roman Catholic Leaders of the 20th century. The project is 85% complete and we're under way with construction of the museum. The museum needs funding, and we have plans for a memorial rose garden.
